European Heritage Day in Paris

“La Parisienne”

This year's theme for La Parisienne women’s running race is the Wild West. As always, the race consists of a 6.7 km course around the Seine and the Eiffel Tower. Since its creation in 1997, the success of La Parisienne has grown year after year with more and more women running in line at the start. Half of the participants are runners sponsored by their company and wearing its colours. The other half is made up of single women, groups of girlfriends, mother-daughter tandems that become trios when the grandmother gets involved!

Paris-Versailles Race

The 42nd edition of the Ile-de-France race is no small feat with about 25,000 participants running the 16 km from Paris to the Palace of Versailles. Departing from the foot of the Eiffel Tower, the runners then pass through Issy Les Moulineaux, Meudon, Velizy and more checkpoints before reaching the Palace of Versailles. Join the locals in cheering them on on 29th September.

The Golden Age of English Painting

This exhibition, based on Tate Britain's masterpieces, highlights a key period in the history of painting in England, from the 1760s to around 1820. 1 BASTILLE DAY FIREWORKS
14th July
Bastille Day is one of the most prominent holidays on the French calendar, marking a turning point in the French Revolution. The day begins at 10am, with a military aircraft flyover at 10:45am and a huge military parade down the Champs-Elysees at 11am. The most awaited fireworks show in the city will burst the sky into colour over the Eiffel Tower, which starts at 11pm. Head down to the Champ de Mars with a picnic to check out the free concerts happening all afternoon.
2 FIREMEN’S BALLS
13th/14th July
These famous parties take place in fire stations all over the city on 13th and 14th July for Bastille Day celebrations. If you’re gonna experience a local party when in Paris, this is one you won’t want to say no to. They go on all night long with plenty of champagne, wine and beer, and, let’s face it, the setting is so unique it pretty much sells itself!

It doesn’t matter that Paris is nowhere near the coast when fake beaches pop up all over the city during the summer. Palm trees, deck chairs and sand will line the banks of the Parc Rives de Seine and the Esplanade, plus you’ll be able to go for a dip in the huge swimming pools at La Villette Canal Basin. Perfect on a hot day a la Paris!
4 TOUR DE FRANCE
29th July
After 2,000 miles and 23 days of hardcore cycling, the Tour de France is coming to a close. The race will end probably between 3-7pm on the Champs-Elysees, with a huge crowd set to gear up for a crazy welcome. The final stretch will allow you plenty of time to catch sight of the cyclists, but if you can’t get a spot on the Champs-Elysees to watch, try the Tuileries Gardens which are usually not quite as busy so you should be able to get a space.

Throughout this summer, the Paris l’Ete Festival will be celebrating the cultural diversity of Paris through music, circus, dance and performance in over 30 different locations around the city. The Paris Jazz Festival is one of the most renowned jazz events worldwide. This year, the Paris Botanical Garden will be hosting the jazz musicians with their enormous fanbase which last year attracted over 120,000. The festival will take place every Saturday and Sunday until 22nd July and the concerts are free however the park charges €2.50 per person. Just grab a blanket, buy a picnic and don’t forget your dancing shoes!

For one night in May every year, Paris’ main museums and galleries keep their doors open to the public late into the night. Be sure to check on timings for the museums you’re interested in visiting on this evening of fun, but usually they will open up at around sunset and close at midnight, and they’re free to enter. Head to the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Centre Pompidou and way more. It’s a great budget-friendly evening activity that’s a true novelty and loads of fun.

If you’re a tennis fan and you’re in Paris for the French Open, why not head over to Roland-Garros (a 50-minute metro from Gare du Nord) and watch a few games live? To watch a main game inside one of the stadiums, it can be a bit pricey. However if you’re up for a day of wandering from court to court in the outdoor area, and grabbing a drink from one of the bars, ticket prices really aren’t too bad and it makes for a great day out!

The Grand Steeplechase of Paris is one of the most anticipated events on the horse racing calendar. Foire du Trône is the oldest traditional funfair in Paris. It’s essentially a local carnival with over 350 attractions including theme park rides. Held at Pelouse de Reuilly, there will be stalls upon stalls of delicious food and sweet treats such as crepes, toffee apples, candyfloss and churros.

Easter Sunday falls on 1st April this year, meaning flowers, church bells, music and chocolate! The first day of April, known to many as April Fool’s Day but known to the French as Le Poisson d’Avril (April Fish). If you happen to be in Paris, or anywhere in France, for this day, you’ll probably see children running around and sticking paper fish to other children and adults’ backs before running away yelling ‘poisson d’Avril!’ Random, but cute.

Every spring, Paris’ leading contemporary art fair comes to the city’s Grand Palais venue. This year is its 20th anniversary, so over 142 galleries comprising of 990 artists from 73 countries will be getting involved, each using all sorts of unusual ways to express themselves through art. Entry is €25 but it will be worth it to check out Paris’ most awaited annual art fair, especially if you’ve never been before.

Take part in the most colourful run of your life. The 5k route is dotted with volunteers to shower you with colour and create a fun, buzzing atmosphere. The point here is definitely not to win, it’s just about getting your new (specially bought) whites as colourful as possible. After you’ve ran your socks off, there’s a Finisher Festival with hours of music and throws of colour to really get the crowd going!

The epic Paris Marathon is back again with a route that marathon-lovers would die to do. Beginning on the Champs-Elysees and winding around the Place de la Concorde, past the Louvre, the Place de la Bastille and of course the Eiffel Tower. This massive run is also noted for its food and drinks stations that include beer, cider, wine and even oysters! If you’re not taking part (which if you haven’t signed up, sadly you won’t be) grab a spot somewhere along the scenic route to cheer on the runners.

Need a fun place to watch Wrestlemania in Paris? The Paris Half Marathon is back for another year. Attracting more than 40,000 runners, the route runs right through the heart of the city and past some of Paris’ most famous landmarks, making for the perfect backdrop both for those taking part and those cheering them on. It’s no wonder people from all over Europe have this one on their bucket list. The Parisian streets spring to life at this time of year, making it well worth checking out for the awesome atmosphere.

The colourful parade of costumed dancers and talented musicians is back for its 21st year in 2018. This year’s theme will be ‘the Tales of Perrault and Elsewhere’, which pretty much means fairy tales by French author Charles Perrault. The carnival starts at Place Gambetta and finishes at the Place de la République and can’t be missed if you happen to be in Paris on 11th February!

Spend a day at the show petting the 300+ breeds of farm animals, learning about the production of wine grapes and more. The show will take place at Paris’ Porte de Versailles and costs €14 online. It’s definitely worth it for a unique day out. There’s even a food hall for you to indulge in the local produce while you’re there.

The Six Nations is pretty huge in Paris (of course as France is one of the teams) meaning the atmosphere in the city’s sports bars will be insane! If you can’t get tickets to the Stade de France head to Belushi’s, the best sports bars in Paris for an epic sports vibe, juicy burgers and flowing drinks. France v Wales is on 1st February and France v Scotland is 23rd.

This one’s for the real car lovers. Retromobile is a major international car event held in Paris’ largest exhibition park Porte de Versailles and is totally devoted to classic cars. TUILERIES CHRISTMAS MARKET - "THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS"
Christmas markets in Paris (known as Marchés de Noël) officially marks the start of the festive season. Last year the famous Champs Elysees Christmas Market was closed to everyone’s surprise, because nothing screams Christmas in Paris like the festive cheer on the world’s most famous avenue, and this year it is closed again. But not to worry, there is an alternative festival called ‘La Magie de Noël’ (The Magic of Christmas) which will be just as amazing held in the Jardin Tuileries next to the Louvre. Hot mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, twinkling lights and juicy sausages. What more could you ask for? There are other markets taking place in Paris too including the Montmartre Christmas Market behind Sacre Coeur and the Notre Dam Christmas market.
ICE SKATING
As Christmas nears, everyone wants to have a go at ice skating in the City of Lights. In Paris there are several places you can rent a pair of skates out and glide around. One of the best places to ice skate is Hôtel de Ville, then you also have one right underneath Eiffel Tower. You get to ice skate while admiring the beauty of Paris greatest landmark! There’s also an ice rink in Champ de Mars.

Be at the heart of the NYE action at Paris’ Champs-Elysees famous street party. Grab a good spot to watch the Eiffel Tower from afar as it dances into 2018 with glistening lights. Alcohol is not permitted in the Champs-Elysees area so don’t make the mistake of bringing your own or you’ll get smacked with a fine. You can, however, find plenty of alcohol and hours of music in the bars and clubs that line the avenue. TECHNO PARADE
22nd September
Record labels, radio stations, DJs and music lovers are all invited to electronic music as this year’s Techno Parade. Follow the floats, each equipped with sound systems and epic DJs, down the streets of Paris. This event is always HUGE - over 400,000 people attended last year. So get involved!
LE GRAND FEU
8th September
Head to the Domaine National de Saint-Cloud on 8th September to see the sky burst into light with a fantastic fireworks display! It’s one of the best displays of fireworks that you’ll see at any time of year, so make sure to put this on your itinerary if you happen to be in Paris at the time.
EUROPEAN HERITAGE DAYS
15th - 16th September
Spend a day during Paris’ European Heritage Days festival discovering or rediscovering the city’s monuments for free. All over France, around 17,000 monuments will be opening their doors to the public that are usually closed. It tends to be a busy weekend but one that’s well worth looking into, especially if you’re in Paris at the time.
‘MASTERPIECES’ AT MUSEE PICASSO
From 4th September
Picasso fans, as of 4th September, make some time to visit the Musee Picasso for the ‘Masterpieces’ exhibition that will be taking over until January 2019. The museum will have some of Picasso’s masterpieces on loan from all over the world, allowing visitors an insight into some of the work that Paris has never yet seen.
FESTIVAL D’AUTOMNE
From 10th September
This celebration of autumn’s arrival is also a celebration of Paris’ cultural arts, allowing visitors to experience theatre, music, film, dance and visual arts in the city. Around 40 venues in Paris such as Theatre de l’Odeon or the Centre Pompidou will be hosting incredible shows and art events that you have to go and check out.

It’s your last chance to make the most of the sandy banks of Paris this year! The Paris Plages will be packing up for autumn on 2nd September, marking the end of another summer in the city.
PARIS-VERSAILLES RUN
30th September
On 30th September, 20,000 people will be joining a race from the foot of the Eiffel Tower in Paris all the way to the Château de Versailles. This year will be the 41st edition of the 16 kilometre run, and the atmosphere along the way is gonna be buzzing! Sadly it’s too late to take part, but set up camp somewhere along the way to cheer on the runners as zoom past you.
PARIS DESIGN WEEK
6th - 15th September
Join Paris in celebrating the city’s incredible world of design. Over 200 venues will be opening up to showcase the best of design in Paris. Art lovers, don’t miss this.
LA NUIT AUX INVALIDES
Ends 1st September
During the summer months, Les Invalides monument has been coming to life in the form of light and sound most evenings, but only until September 1st. The story of 1918 La Naissance D’un Monde Nouveau highlights the events of World War One through the eyes of a child. It’s a spectacular 45-minute story shown through light and sound, and you can watch it for free when you order tickets online.JANUARY 2019
ICE SKATING AT THE GRAND PALAIS

Make the most of the last of Paris’ Christmas ice rinks. The one at the Grand Palais is one you don’t want to miss, skating beneath the stunning domes which glow in the evening. Make sure you get there before it all gets packed up for another year on 8th January!
PARIS FASHION WEEK
17 - 25 January
Keep an eye out for January’s Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week. They’ve not yet released a schedule but it’s always a huge event with loads going on. If you’re into your fashion, you’d better make time for one of the biggest shows in one of the fashion capitals of the world.
NEW YEAR’S DAY
Most museums and shops will be shut on New Year’s Day, however this makes it the perfect day to go out for a stroll, have a coffee and croissant and explore Paris’ quaint cafes.
MAGNIFICENT VENICE AT THE GRAND PALAIS

Head to Paris’ famous Grand Palais for a stunning art exhibition on Magnificent Venice back in the 18th century. Showcasing work by numerous different talented artists, each piece captures the city’s unique flair in beautiful ways so if you’re a lover of landscape art, this exhibition is definitely for you. Bear in mind that the show is closed on Tuesdays.
