Check out the 5 best places in Amsterdam to get delicious, affordable sushi…

RESTAURANT AN

Weteringschans 76, 1017 XR

If you’ve ever been lucky enough to visit Japan, you’ll be transported right back if you choose to eat at Restaurant An. This Japanese owned restaurant is one of Amsterdam’s most authentic places to get your sushi fix. The chef at An makes everything by hand, using only the freshest ingredients and transforming them into the most beautiful rolls of perfect sushi. A particular favourite is the kaisen roll (scallop, sweet shrimp, squid, fish roe and mayonnaise) or the simple salmon nigiri (rice topped with fresh, delicate salmon). Try the homemade avocado ice cream for dessert - it’s a sensation!

GENKI

Reguliersdwarsstraat 26, 1017 BM

We all know that buying sushi as you eat it can add up to a surprisingly hefty bill, but when it’s all-you-can-eat you can go as nuts as you want and you don’t even have to worry! We recommend at Genki that you opt for the lunchtime all-you-can-eat sushi menu. Most people struggle to finish, so if you go for lunch you probably won’t need much dinner later. Grab a seat outside in their pretty back garden so you can relax and unwind whilst enjoying some fresh California rolls and spicy tuna. With sashimi, nigiri and maki rolls galore, sushi lovers will be in paradise.

SUSHILEE

George Gershwinlaan 534, 1082 MT

Nestled between a few office blocks a little off the beaten track is a favourite pit stop amongst Amsterdam’s business-people. Sushilee’s decor is relaxed yet elegant just like it's menu, with authentic Japanese hot dishes on offer but affordable sushi being the main draw. It may not be the cheapest on this list, but when a 12 piece ‘salmon set’ is €13, and it tastes as good as it is, you’ve still done pretty damn well for your money. Bare in mind that the kitchen closes at 7pm so don’t arrive too late!

SUSHI TAKE OUT

Damstraat 30A, 1012 JM

Think fresh, not fancy. As the name suggests, Sushi Take Out is, well, a sushi takeaway joint in Amsterdam’s city centre, but it deserves way more credit than it gets. If it’s good, fresh sushi that you’re after, and you’re not worried about the atmosphere, take a seat in their simple restaurant or order to go and munch it down in nearby Dam Square. Their salmon sashimi and tuna nigiri just melts in the mouth.

ONIGIRI YA

Ferdinand Bolstraat 37, 1072 LB

Ok, so not technically sushi, but the onigiri from Onigiri YA is still a delicious taste of Japan or even a tasty alternative for those that aren’t big of the raw fish thing. Onigiri is a triangular shaped ball of sticky rice that comes in many different flavours like wasabi pork, yakitori chicken or simple salmon and wrapped in a little rectangle of salty nori (the seaweed layer of sushi). If you’ve got a blocked nose, come here for a good wasabi kick and you’ll be cured! This sweet little eatery is a cheap, tasty and filling lunchtime option that you’ve just got to try.
