St Christopher’s Edinburgh – Old Town

Cross the road from Waverley and you are already inside Edinburgh’s mediaeval Old Town. From this address, Edinburgh Castle is under a mile on foot, Princes Street takes five minutes, and the Grassmarket is a short walk downhill. St Christopher’s Inn Edinburgh – Old Town boasts contemporary rooms and bathrooms, Pod beds with privacy curtains, and a Belushi’s bar that draws students, locals and travellers in equal measure. The building has been here since the Victorian era. In the 1890s it was a fruit and vegetable market, and the large safe used to store the day’s takings was found during development, completely empty save for a single shoe. Rather than remove it, St Christopher’s built around it. The Vault Room is a private ensuite with the original steel safe door as its working entrance, and it is unlike anything else available in this city at any price point.

You’ve arrived

The hostel is just two minutes from the platform so before you know it, you’ve checked in, dropped your bags in the locker and heading out to explore The Old Town you can already see from your window.

Heading to the castle

The Royal Mile runs from your front door to Edinburgh Castle. So you head up the cobbles, take a left into the Grassmarket, find a cafe, and by early afternoon you have covered so much of the city without going far.

Welcome drinks

Thirsty from your walk, you head downstairs to Belushi’s. There is a drink at the bar with your name on it, a bar packed with locals and the evenings activity is just getting started. Half your dorm is already there.

Edinburgh knows how to do evenings

The live music starts and the bar finds its rhythm. Students, locals, travellers, Belushi’s draws all three in equal measure and the result is an evening that was not in the original plan. Edinburgh’s pub culture runs late and with Belushi’s right downstairs, you don’t have to go searching for it.

The morning after

First, coffee downstairs in next door’s Jake’s Café/Bar. Yesterday you learned the layout. Today you know which streets to go back to, which ones you missed, and exactly how much ground this address puts within reach.

Where is St Christopher’s Inn Edinburgh Old Town and how do I get there?

The hostel sits on Market Street in Edinburgh’s Old Town, less than two minutes on foot from Waverley station – the city’s main rail hub with direct connections from London, Glasgow, and major Scottish cities. Edinburgh Airport is around 30 minutes away by tram, with the tram stop at St Andrew Square a short walk from the hostel. The Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, and the majority of the Old Town’s key sights are within easy walking distance from the front door.

What is the difference between St Christopher’s Inn Edinburgh Old Town and St Christopher’s Inn Edinburgh

Both properties sit on Market Street, directly opposite each other, and share the same exceptional Old Town location. St Christopher’s Inn Edinburgh Original is the older of the two – the first St Christopher’s hostel in Scotland, and carries the charm and character of a building that has been welcoming travellers for decades. Edinburgh Old Town is the newer property, with more recently updated facilities and a fresher feel throughout. Both share access to Belushi’s bar and the same direct booking benefits. The right choice depends on whether you prefer character and history or a more contemporary finish – either way, the location is identical.

What room types are available and can the hostel accommodate groups?

The hostel offers shared dorms, pod-style rooms with individual privacy curtains, female-only accommodation, and private rooms for those who want their own space. Group bookings are accommodated with support from the team. Book direct for the lowest available rate, a free welcome drink on arrival, free cancellation, and 25% off food and drink throughout your stay.

What facilities are available and what are the check-in and check-out times?

Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out is by 11:00. Luggage storage is available for guests arriving early or leaving later. There is no full guest kitchen, but a microwave, hot water, and vending machines are available on-site. Belushi’s bar serves food and drink throughout the day and evening and is the most practical on-site option for meals. A continental breakfast can be added to your booking at the time of reservation for £5 — the most straightforward and affordable way to start a day in Edinburgh.

Is Edinburgh Old Town safe and easy to navigate as a solo traveller?

Edinburgh is one of the UK’s most walkable and solo-friendly cities. The Old Town is well-lit, busy, and safe at most hours — the hostel’s location on Market Street puts guests in the heart of it without being in the most chaotic tourist corridors. Female-only dorms are available for solo female travellers who want additional reassurance. Belushi’s bar and the hostel’s social spaces make meeting other travellers easy from the first evening, which is particularly useful for anyone arriving alone.

What is the atmosphere like and is there a bar on-site?

Belushi’s bar is on-site and runs events throughout the week – live music, pub quizzes, happy hours, and organised social nights. Edinburgh has one of the UK’s best pub cultures and the Old Town in particular rewards an evening spent moving between venues — Belushi’s is a natural starting point before heading out into the Grassmarket, the Cowgate, or the Royal Mile. During the Edinburgh Festival in August the city operates on an entirely different level — if you are visiting then, book as early as possible.
