St Christopher’s Berlin – Mitte

One of the most socially alive hostels in Berlin. Belushi’s Bar runs regular events, the wintergarten spills the atmosphere outside, and the kind of evening that starts with one drink rarely ends there. This is a property built for people who want to meet others, not just sleep near them. The rooms range from dormitories to private options, all within a building that sits at one of Berlin’s most useful intersections. Close enough to the historic centre to walk it and far enough from the tourist trail to know you are staying in authentic Berlin. Friedrichstraße station is five minutes on foot, which means the rest of the city is never more than a short journey away.

You’ve arrived!

There is a particular quality to arriving in Mitte for the first time. The scale of it, the sense that history and the present are occupying the same streets without much effort. St Christopher’s Inn Berlin Mitte has been the starting point for countless first-time Berlin trips, and from the moment you check in on Ziegelstraße, the city begins to reveal itself at exactly the right pace. Museum Island is already visible from the surrounding streets. The rest follows naturally.

The city at your feet

You head out with no particular plan and the neighbourhood takes care of the rest. Hackescher Markt is a few minutes walk, the courtyard galleries of the Hackesche Höfe draw you in, and somewhere between a coffee on Rosenthaler Straße and a wander along the Spree you realise the afternoon has disappeared entirely.

Back at Belushi’s

By early evening the bar is filling up with people who have spent the day pulling the city apart from different directions. Someone found the street art in Prenzlauer Berg, someone else got lost in the Pergamon. The first round gets ordered, stories start crossing the table, and before long nobody is in any hurry to leave. Belushi’s has a way of turning a quiet drink into the kind of night you did not plan for.

Berlin after dark

You move between the bar and the city a few times before the night settles into something. A walk through Mitte leads to a side street bar, the side street bar leads back to Belushi’s for one more, and by the end of the evening you are deep in conversation with people who were strangers at check-in. Berlin nights have a habit of going longer than you intended, and that is rarely a bad thing.

Morning two

Coffee first. The group from last night reassembles slowly and someone has already looked up the S-Bahn connections. The Brandenburg Gate is 12 minutes by train if you want the postcard moment, or you can head east towards Friedrichshain and spend the morning at the East Side Gallery or in the sunshine at Boxhagener Platz. Either way, the city is already waiting.

Belushi’s Mitte

The Berlin bar with a Wintergarten and a rooftop terrace

Belushi’s Mitte has something most bars in Berlin do not: the option to take the evening outside with a view of the TV tower. The kitchen serves homemade burgers, German classics, and bar snacks. Live sport plays across big screens and projectors throughout the week.

Your questions

Travellers’ frequently asked questions

These answers come from staff at St Christopher’s Inn Berlin Mitte who know this property and this part of the city in genuine detail. The bar, the rooftop, the walk to Museum Island, and the things worth knowing before you arrive. If something is still holding you back, read on.

Where is St Christopher’s Berlin – Mitte and how do I get there from the main stations?

St Christopher’s Mitte sits in the heart of Berlin Mitte, a short walk from Hackescher Markt S-Bahn station. From Berlin Hauptbahnhof, the S5, S7 or S75 gets you to Hackescher Markt in around ten minutes. From BER Brandenburg Airport, take the Airport Express (FEX) or the RE7/RB14 regional trains directly to Berlin Hauptbahnhof, then change onto the S-Bahn. The whole journey takes around 45 minutes. The neighbourhood starts the moment you step off the train.

What is the rooftop like and when can I use it?

The rooftop terrace is one of the things that sets Mitte apart. It is a genuine outdoor space with views over the Berlin roofline, and on a clear evening it is hard to leave. Opening hours vary by season, so it is worth checking with reception when you arrive, but in the warmer months it tends to be one of the most-used spots in the building. There is no booking required, just head up.

How far is Museum Island and what else is nearby?

Museum Island is about a 10-minute walk from the hostel, following the Spree through one of the more pleasant stretches of central Berlin. The Pergamon, the Altes Museum and the Bode Museum are all clustered together, so it is easy to spend a half-day or a full one depending on how deep you want to go. Beyond that, the Hackesche Höfe courtyard complex is a short walk away, Rosenthaler Straße has good independent coffee and food, and Prenzlauer Berg is a short U-Bahn or bike ride north if you want a quieter, more residential side of the city.

What is Belushi’s like and do I need to be a guest to drink there?

Belushi’s Mitte is a full bar and venue open to anyone, not just hostel guests. It has a busy atmosphere most evenings, live events on a regular basis, and food available alongside the drinks. For guests booking direct there is a free welcome drink waiting for you at check-in, plus 25% off food at the bar throughout your stay. It is the kind of place that tends to pull you in for one drink and keep you considerably longer.

Is the hostel suitable if I am travelling solo?

Mitte works well for solo travellers. The location means you can get out and explore independently without needing to organise anything in advance, and Belushi’s downstairs is genuinely easy to meet people in. The bar attracts a mix of guests and locals, and conversations tend to start without much effort. Reception staff know the area well and are happy to point you towards the things worth doing, including the parts of the city that do not show up on the standard tourist map.
