St Christopher’s Paris – Canal

On the Bassin de la Villette, five minutes from Crimée Metro and three stops from Gare du Nord, St Christopher’s Paris – Canal’s connections mean nowhere in feels far away. The 19th arrondissement is residential and unhurried in a way the tourist centre is not, and the canal runs directly alongside the building. The neighbourhood has its own pace. Independent restaurants and canal-side bars line the streets around the hostel, and the Parc de Buttes-Chaumont is just a ten-minute walk. In summer, free outdoor swimming pools open on the Bassin de la Villette This Paris backpacker hostel offers something that a well-located room in the tourist centre simply cannot: a waterfront terrace on the canal, a neighbourhood worth spending time in, and a social atmosphere downstairs that runs as late as Paris expects a good night to run.

You’ve arrived!

Check-in takes minutes. The lockers are sorted, the Wi-Fi is connected, and then you step outside and the canal is in front of you. The 19th arrondissement does not look like Paris is supposed to look. That turns out to be exactly the point.

Canal side Paris

You follow the canal south, past groups of Parisians playing pétanque in the afternoon sun. You stop at a canal-side café and order a glass of wine on the terrace. There is no particular reason to move on. Eventually you do, through the Parc de Buttes-Chaumont, and back.

First drink on us

Your welcome drink is waiting downstairs at Belushi’s. The bar is louder than you expected, in a good way. You take a seat, order food with your 25% off, and the evening arranges itself around you without any effort on your part.

One more round

The beer pong starts as a friendly game and becomes considerably more competitive than anyone intended. New people keep appearing. The bar stays open and Paris, true to form, shows no sign of winding down.

Morning on the terrace

The terrace in the morning is a different place to the terrace at night. You bring a coffee and a croissant outside and the canal is catching the early light. The city is just starting up around you. Last night was later than planned. This morning, you are in no hurry at all.

Your questions

Travellers’ frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before you arrive, answered by people who know this hostel well. From check-in to breakfast, the practical questions are covered here so nothing gets in the way of the stay itself.

Where is St Christopher’s Inn Paris Canal and how do I get there?

The hostel is at 159 Rue de Crimée in the 19th arrondissement, a 15-minute Metro ride from Gare du Nord on line 7 – take the Metro to Crimée station, which is a short walk from the front door. From Charles de Gaulle airport, take the RER B to Gare du Nord and change onto line 7. From Paris city centre, the Crimée Metro stop connects you directly without needing to change lines from most central stations.

What facilities are available and what are the check-in and check-out times?

Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out is by 11:00. Luggage storage is available for guests arriving early or leaving later. There is no full guest kitchen, but a microwave, hot water, and vending machines are available on-site. Belushi’s bar serves food and drink throughout the day and evening and is the most practical option for meals.

Is breakfast available at St Christopher’s Inn Paris Canal?

A full continental breakfast is available and worth adding to your booking at the time of reservation – at €6 it is significantly cheaper than buying on arrival or heading to a café in the 19th arrondissement. It is the most straightforward way to start the day before heading into the city.

Is St Christopher’s Inn Paris Canal good for solo travellers?

The hostel is well set up for solo travellers, with Belushi’s bar and regular events making it straightforward to meet other guests from the first evening. Female-only dorms are available for solo female travellers who want that additional reassurance. The 19th arrondissement has a genuine local character – less tourist-facing than central Paris, with the Canal de l’Ourcq, Parc de la Villette, and the Cité des Sciences on the doorstep, all of which reward solo exploration.

Is the area around the hostel safe?

The 19th arrondissement is a residential, working Parisian neighbourhood rather than a tourist-facing one – it has real local character and is home to some of the city’s best canal-side spaces and cultural venues. Standard city awareness applies, particularly around Crimée Metro station late at night. The hostel itself is secure, staffed around the clock, and well-reviewed for the safety and comfort of its guests.

Is there parking near St Christopher’s Inn Paris Canal?

The hostel has no on-site parking, but Parking 2000 at 234 Rue de Crimée is the most practical nearby option – a short walk from the hostel, open 24 hours, and at around €25 per 24 hours it is reasonably priced by Paris standards. It is worth booking in advance where possible. Note that driving in central Paris is not recommended for most guests – the Metro and RER network makes a car unnecessary for the vast majority of trips within the city.
